Viking Ocean Cruises boasts a fleet of new, all-veranda, state-of-the-art ocean ships. Each identical sister ship carries only 930 guests and is engineered at a scale that allows direct access into most ports. Classified by Cruise Critic as “small ships,” the fleet features understated elegance and modern Scandinavian design.
Although they don't consider themselves a "luxury" brand, they offer a substantial amount of inclusions that provide their customers that ability to explore the world in comfort. This is consistent with their balcony only design, and the space ratio that their ships provide.
Where Viking Travels
With the widest ocean horizons filled with possibility, there are destinations to explore, cultures to welcome you and fantastic natural beauty to behold. Featuring many cruises from 7 to 200+ days you can see as much of the world as you desire, and with the smaller ship size they can often get into smaller ports as well.
Stateroom Features
Viking's intimate, all-veranda ships offer a wide variety of staterooms for your selection. From Veranda Staterooms to the abundance of extra perks and amenities in their spacious Explorer Suites, there’s no finer way to travel. And whichever stateroom you choose, you will find it beautifully designed in the understated elegance for which Viking is known.
The main difference between the room categories are the reservations for the complementary excursions, and specialty dining. The earlier you have access to these offerings the easier it is to get exactly what you want on your cruise. For this reason alone many people avoid the introductory Veranda Stateroom since it does not have any guaranteed restaurant reservations and is the last in line to book excursions.

OUR FIRST VIKING RIVER CRUISE
Viking is synonymous with river cruising, so when the opportunity came to sail the Seine River on the 8-day Paris and the Heart of Normandy itinerary, we jumped at the chance.
We have sailed on Viking Ocean cruises, so we are used to the line's level of service. The cruise line makes sure that all guests are well taken care of from the moment they arrive at the airport. From transfers to time ashore, the crew and staff offer exceptional and tailored service to everyone onboard.
The cruise line offers plenty of included amenities that make travel abroad seamless and efficient. Embarkation is a breeze, and getting on and off the ship at each port is casual and simple, with no lines or security hassles.
Along with transfers, the cruise line includes a tour of each port, WiFi, onboard specialty coffees and teas, bottled water, and soft drinks, and all onboard meals. Beer and wine are also included at meals. While the inclusions are great, the ships do have few onboard amenities. There is no fitness center, pool, or spa, although there is a small library.
We were also surprised at the limited onboard enrichment offered during our trip. Besides a local artist giving a lecture on impressionism, the program director gave all of the lectures. Mia was great, fun, and personable, but we expect more in-depth offerings regarding the itinerary and France.
The tours, too, were a mixed bag. We thought all of the tour guides were fantastic. They were knowledgeable and engaging. While we enjoyed many of the included tours, we were disappointed in our bus tour of Paris.
When evaluating the food for this Viking River cruise review, we would say the food quality was better overall than most mainstream cruise lines. Menus were quite limited, but they offered more upscale offerings tailored to the region. Also, we were surprised that both onboard eateries served the same menu.
Each day, the dining times are on a set schedule, with open seating for all meals. So, you will get to know the roughly 160 other guests on the ship quite well.
Our cozy veranda stateroom offered all of the typical features of a larger ship’s room in a tighter space. The bathroom had luxury bath products and heated tile floors. We have plenty of clothes space and additional storage for our gear. There was a small table and chair I was able to use as my office on Viking Radgrid, and having the veranda was a nice touch to watch the banks of the river roll by from the comforts of our room.
The 8-day itinerary included two days in Paris, a morning of self-exploration in La Roche Guyon, a walking tour of the historic city of Rouen, retracing the steps of allied heroes at the beaches of Normandy, and a warm and sunny full day at the quaint village of Les Andelys. Along with included tours, we also opted for optional additional tours of Versailles and the Louvre. Our Seine river cruise also included a tour of Napoleon's chateau and time sailing along this river's historic banks.

I met so many regular Norwegian cruisers on my Norwegian Viva cruise that disliked this new Prima class of Norwegian Cruise Line ships that I started wondering if Norwegian had actually gone out of their way to create a new type of ship they knew current cruisers wouldn’t like! Perhaps to attract different cruisers, perhaps cruisers like me.
I’m not a regular Norwegian cruiser, largely because I’ve not been a fan of the Norwegian ships I’ve been on, but this ship did some things so differently it made me rethink my position, as you will hear.

I dive into nine big difference that I think you'll notice if you sail on the two lines. From private islands, to the ship size, to the price you pay, there are some things that simply aren't the same on the two lines.

If you’re going on a cruise onboard Norwegian Joy, you’re in luck. The dining options and restaurants on Norwegian Joy are amazing! This NCL Joy dining guide will help you to know the best food & dining options on board.
If you love cruise food, you’re on the right cruise ship. We recently spent 7 days onboard for a Bermuda cruise, and tried just about every dining experience. This NCL joy food review highlights some of what we ate.
In this video I share my favorite casual and specialty restaurants, along with some NCL dining tips and tricks you need to know.
From popular specialty dining like Cagney’s steakhouse and La Cucina, to an amazing casual restaurant, Food Republic, I’ve included lots of information and video of the Norwegian Joy cruise food.
Many of these restaurants can be booked as part of your dining package (NCL Free at Sea). I’ve also included some of Norwegian Joy’s free or included dining options that are so worth trying!
This includes the 24 hour casual restaurant, The Local, and American Diner. This is well kept secret, as most cruisers think this sit down burger restaurant is extra.
Other amazing restaurants to try on Norwegian Joy including Ocean Blue, which even has outdoor dining on The Waterfront. Teppanyaki is a favorite, so be sure to make reservations as soon as possible on embarkation day.
Le Bistro is a fancy French restaurant. Don’t forget to have a glass of champagne, which is included in your Norwegian Cruise Line Premium Plus drink package.
From breakfast to dinner to late night snacks, you’ll love the dining options and food onboard the Norwegian Joy cruise ship. This includes NCL Joy specialty dining and casual dining choices.
